If you've seen full-color, no-weeding shirt designs taking over Etsy and TikTok, you've seen DTF transfers. DTF stands for direct-to-film — a printing method where your design is printed onto a special film, coated with hot-melt adhesive powder, and cured. You then press it onto a garment with heat. The result: vibrant, stretchy, wash-resistant prints on almost any fabric.
How DTF printing works (in 4 steps)
- Print: Your artwork is printed in CMYK plus a white ink layer onto PET film.
- Powder: A hot-melt adhesive powder is applied to the wet ink.
- Cure: The film runs through an oven, melting the powder into a bondable layer.
- Press: You apply the transfer to a shirt with a heat press (310°F / 154°C for 10–15 seconds with firm pressure), peel the film, and you're done.
What fabrics do DTF transfers work on?
This is DTF's superpower. Unlike sublimation (polyester only, light colors only), DTF works on:
- 100% cotton — light or dark
- Polyester and poly blends
- Tri-blends, fleece, canvas, denim, nylon (with care)
Why sellers and crafters switched to DTF
- No weeding. Unlike HTV vinyl, there's nothing to cut or pick out.
- Full color, no color limits. Gradients, photos, fine detail all print clean.
- Durable. Properly pressed DTF survives 50–100+ washes without cracking.
- No minimums. You can order a single transfer or a full gang sheet.
What does a DTF transfer cost?
Single ready-to-press designs typically run $2.50–$5. Custom transfers are priced by size, and gang sheets (multiple designs on one large sheet) bring the per-design cost down dramatically — often under $1 per small design.
Do you need special equipment?
Just a heat source. A clamshell heat press or Cricut EasyPress gives the most consistent results; a household iron can work for occasional projects (see our home iron guide). You do not need a printer — that's our job.
DTF FAQ
Is DTF the same as iron-on vinyl? No. Vinyl (HTV) is cut from colored sheets and weeded by hand. DTF is printed, so it handles unlimited color and detail with zero weeding.
Does DTF feel thick? Modern DTF has a soft, thin hand — noticeably lighter than layered vinyl.
How do I apply one? See our full pressing guide with temp and time chart.
